Plasma or serum samples without preservative (NaF) should be separated from the cells or clot within half an hour of being drawn. Collect urine in a dark bottle. For 24 hour urine collections, glucose may be preserved by adding 5 mL of glacial acetic acid to the container before collection. Unpreserved urine samples may lose up to 40 % of their glucose after 24 hour storage at room temperature. Therefore, keep samples on ice during collection.
